Global assessment of mountain biodiversity

This first-of-its-kind initiative was started in June 2024 and aims at a dual assessment of mountain biodiversity research and of current trends in mountain biodiversity at global scale. It builds upon a corpus of hundreds of thousands of annotated mountain biodiversity publications as well as on the expertise of hundreds of mountain biodiversity experts worldwide. This assessment fills a critical gap in mountain biodiversity knowledge across scales and represents a key contribution to ongoing efforts by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. It furthers offers baseline knowledge for reporting on the trajectories of mountain ecosystems and for science-based decision-making.
