The GMBA regional hub for Africa was established in April 2024 at the Afromontane Research Unit of the University of the Free State in South Africa. The hub is under the leadership of Prof. Peter Taylor. The Southern African hub aims to:

  • Increase networking among (southern) African mountain biodiversity scientists, consolidate relationships for a community of practice, encourage research opportunities for early career academics and students, and encourage a science-policy-practitioner interface in the region, including driving the "Southern African Mountain Biodiversity Treaty" with UNESCO Southern Africa(Harare) and the Southern African Development Community ( SADC).
  • Drive capacity building activities for (southern) African mountain biodiversity research
  • Drive data and literature mobilization from (southern) Africa into the GMBA global mountain biodiversity portal
  • Plan and co-ordinate (southern) African mountain biodiversity workshops
  • Encourage connectivity and co-operation with other Hubs and biodiversity scientists in the southern hemisphere(and elsewhere as necessary or practical).
  • With the GMBA co-chairs and office, to assist with coordinating regular webinars across the GMBA network to promote global communication and support a global community of practice in mountain science
  • Initiate and contribute to targeted projects focusing on (southern) African mountain areas with limited biodiversity data
